LAST NIGHT, AUTHOR Louise O’Neill’s documentary Asking For It aired on RTÉ 2.
Inspired by the novel of the same name, the documentary saw O’Neill explore the issue of sexual assault, consent and rape culture. It touched on themes of slut shaming, victim blaming and Ireland’s overall relationship with sex and sexuality.
And it sparked a hugely important and passionate conversation on Twitter.
People were full of praise for O’Neill and her documentary
Women and girls were quick to highlight the horrifying prevalence of sexual assault and harassment
While stats like these made for some sobering reading
The documentary highlighted the inadequacy of the conversation around consent in Ireland
And people thought it should be mandatory viewing in secondary schools
Seriously, though
A scene in which O’Neill visited a courtroom to simulate what rape victims go through was particularly affecting
Can we talk about the truth bombs?
All in all, the whole thing was a fairly grim, eye-opening look at what women have to put up with in Ireland
Let’s just hope the times are a-changing, eh?
